Before moving to Cambridge (2009-2022), Susan worked in the Centre for Housing Research at Glasgow University (1985-90), held the Ogilvie Chair of Geography at the University of Edinburgh (1990-2004), and was Professor of Geography and an inaugural Director of the Institute of Advanced Study at Durham University (2004-9). Her work has embraced themes as diverse as residential segregation, housing for health and fear of crime, but is anchored on the changing character of economic inequality in the long run, with particular reference to the role of housing wealth and mortgage debt.
